Educational Psychology

The role of Stockton's Educational Psychology Service is to help children and young people aged 0-19, regardless of their background circumstances, to have positive outcomes in the 5 areas outlined in Every Child Matters: Change for Children:

  • Be healthy (including emotional health);
  • Stay safe;
  • Enjoy and achieve through learning;
  • Make a positive contribution to society;
  • Achieve economic well-being.

This is achieved through the application of psychology, which is the study of people's thought processes underlying learning, behaviour, social and emotional development.

This role involves working effectively with individuals and groups of children, teachers and other adults in early years' settings and schools, families, other Local Authority officers within Children, Education and Social Care, the Health Service and other agencies.

Work can be at different levels: individual child, groups, systemic (such as whole school, family or community) and at Local Authority Level.
