Re-Registering a Birth

If as parents you were not married to each other at the time of your child's birth, and although you may have given the child your partner's surname, in the event you should marry each other, there is a requirement in law for you to apply for the child's birth to be re-registered.

After you are married, you will need to complete an application form called an LA1.  Currently, you will need to attend at the register office for the district where the birth occurred, (or any other register office and give a declaration which the registrar will send to the correct district for you). The registrar will need the completed application form, the original birth certificate and your marriage certificate, and only one of you need attend.  If you were married outside of England and Wales we would apply to the General Register Office at Southport on your behalf for their authorisation.
