Congratulations to the proud parents
Well done mum and dad, now that your little one has arrived, sleepless nights may be on the way, but don't forget to take time out to register the birth. This is what you need to do:
You have 42 days in which to register the birth of your baby. If the baby's natural parents were married to each other at the time of the birth, then either of you can register the baby. If you are the mother and not married to baby's natural father you can register the baby yourself, but if you wish to have the father's details shown in the birth entry then the father must attend with you. If he is unable to attend with you please telephone the Stockton on Tees Register Office for further advice.
A birth must be registered in the district in which it occurred, so, for example, a baby born at the University Hospital of North Tees must be registered in Stockton-on-Tees, either at the Register office, or at the Hospital itself. If, however, you do not live in the district where baby was born, it is possible to attend any Register Office in England and Wales to make a 'Birth Declaration'. This process allows you to provide all of the information necessary to register the birth, which is then forwarded to the district where the birth occurred.
