Registering a still-birth
If your baby was stillborn, we appreciate that this will be a very emotional time for you - our staff at Nightingale House are here to help and guide you through this difficult time. You may feel you want to contact us immediately, but please be aware that legally you have 42 days in to record your baby's details. If the baby's natural parents were married to each other at the time of the birth, then either of you can register your baby. If you are the mother and not married to baby's natural father you can register your baby yourself, but if you wish to have the father's details shown in the stillbirth register then the father must attend with you. If he is unable to attend with you please telephone the Stockton on Tees Register Office for further advice.
Before you can register your baby you need to obtain the stillbirth certificate from the doctor or midwife. You will need to bring this with you when you record your baby's details - if you have any difficulty obtaining this certificate, please ring us for advice.
