Stockton Town Centre Regeneration

Stockton Council has developed an Action Plan to guide the regeneration of Stockton Town Centre and its riverside sites. The plan sets out a 15 year vision for the regeneration of these areas.

Strategic Projects

The action plan has been drafted in a manner that separates the strategic projects from the Town Centre management initiatives. Not only does it reflect many of the initiatives and projects currently being considered and delivered, but it also represents an opportunity to come up with some visionary long term solutions for key strategic sites. These sites have been selected as priority regeneration sites based on

  • Improving links between the town centre, riverside and North Shore, to create a riverside destination;
  • Increasing the activity and economic performance of the town centre and riverside area; and
  • Delivering high quality entrances and gateways to the town centre through the creation of landmark developments that will help put Stockton on the map.

Town Centre Operations

The action plan also includes initiatives for improving the way in which activities within the town centre are managed:

  • Creating a buzz: Improving Vitality - street cafes, performance spaces for events and festivals and extended trading hours in the early evening and Sundays.
  • Making the Town Centre inclusive: celebration of the multiculturalism of Stockton and the introduction of a retail crime prevention initiative.
  • Improving attractiveness & amenity: developing a lighting strategy for key buildings within the Town Centre, to highlight the town's important landmarks.
  • Improving access for residents, shoppers and visitors: raising awareness of Stockton as a shopping destination through the production of a shoppers' magazine and improving links with Durham University.
  • Celebrating our heritage: enhancing Stockton's 'Queen of the North' market by revising the layout of the stalls, commissioning new stall covers and rationalising street furniture in the High Street.
