Our plans for Stockton Town Centre
Ideas for the redevelopment of Stockton High Street were presented for public consultation in March 2011. As a result of the consultation exercise we have amended the plans and where possible have incorporated some of the comments that we have received from people.
Some of the discussions that we have decided to consider:
North High Street
-
New road layout accommodating buses, cars and taxis - 61 new car parking spaces created on the High Street
- Flexible space for events and specialist markets
- Views of the riverside and Infinity Bridge
- 70% of respondents supported the delivery of a dedicated events space

South High Street
-
New road layout delivering time savings on bus journeys - 46 new car parking spaces created on the High Street
- Relocated bus stops and taxi rank
- Dedicated space for the regular market
- 69% of respondents supported the re-introduction of car parking on the High Street
Central High Street
-
Focal point of High Street incorporating seating, grass and water - Space to sit, relax and play
- Flexible space that will hold large events
- Detailed design ongoing
- 75% of respondents agreed with our ideas to improve the High Street
The Globe
Work is continuing inside the theatre, stripping out old furniture and fittings, draining flooded areas of the building and repairing the roof. The redeveloped theatre is likely to open in 2013.
Heritage
One of Stockton's key historical buildings, 127-128 High Street was recently refurbished as part of the Stockton Heritage in Partnership (SHiP) project. Two additional listed buildings will be refurbished.
Stockton's Riverside
A dramatic lighting scheme alongside the River Tees is the latest addition to Stockton Town Centre as it undergoes its £20 million regeneration.
Stockton Library and Customer Service Centre
Our £1.8 million state-of-the-art library and customer service centre opened on November 1 2011.
