Brunswick Chapel
Brunswick Methodist Chapel was a listed Grade II* building, in private ownership, and on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register. A lack of adequate maintenance, under previous ownership, over an extended period of time had resulted in the deterioration of the building and the structure became unsafe.
The building posed a risk to public safety and a series of road closures had to be put in place to protect people. Those proved to be effective when the building suffered a partial collapse on Monday 21st December. The owner has subsequently demolished the remains. The loss of a Grade II* building is an exceptional occurrence.
Application
SHiP funding was used during 2008/09 to produce a study investigating the possible uses that the building could be put to. Whilst it concluded, a feasible re-use could be found and the condition of the building prevented this from occurring.
