External Audit

The Audit Commission appoints external auditors to all local authorities and NHS bodies in England and Wales and helps to bring about improvements in economy, efficiency and effectiveness through value for money studies and the audit process.

The Audit Commission is the external auditor for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council. In addition to auditing the Council's accounts, the Commission also provide an independent assessment of the management arrangements within the Authority, whether the Best Value Performance Plan complies with statutory requirements and generally how well the Council discharges its stewardship of public money.

A formal stage in this process is the production of the Annual Audit and Inspection Letter. This provides a comprehensive and independent assessment of the 'health' of the Council.

A copy of the latest Annual Audit and Inspection Letter, for the 2004/2005 audit, which was published in December 2005 is available as a download. (See Below)
