Raising the Performance Level of Pupils

In 2003 Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder set up its Education Intervention Team with the aim of raising the performance levels of pupils living in the Parkfield/Mill Lane Area of Stockton-on-Tees. The team has worked with children and their families, as well as with schools and other agencies, to bring about changes in educational opportunities for the residents.

The Neighbourhood Management programme of community improvement aims to bring long-term benefits to pupils’ learning. Existing barriers preventing children from reaching their potential include poor health, socio-economic deprivation, and a high incidence of crime. Neighbourhood Management priorities include improving security in the community, health, the environment and the quality of local housing. The Education Intervention is supporting these changes.

The challenge of raising pupil performance has been addressed by improving engagement with the curriculum and the processes of learning, by building confidence and aspirations, and by encouraging support from parents and families. The Education Intervention aims not just to improve current performance levels, but also to allow other agencies to continue these improvements in the future. The Intervention has set up programmes run by teachers, schools and other agencies so ownership and sustainability is built into the programme.

The activities of the Education Intervention team have addressed four important aspects of learning:

Improving pupils’ access to the curriculum

Encouraging participation and self esteem by curriculum enrichment

Transition of pupils between primary and secondary school

Encouraging parents and families to support children’s learning
