Water sport enthusiasts in the Borough are well catered for with three watersports centres on the Tees: Castlegate Quay, the River Tees Water Sports and the Four Season Water Sports Centres.
All boat owners must register with the Rivermaster and have the necessary insurance before they can use their craft on the river. Advice on the launching and recovery of boats and the use of slipways will be provided. Moorings can also be arranged. British Waterways tel. 01642 633 273
Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre The Castlegate Quay Water Sports Centre is situated on the riverside in Stockton. It is a purpose built centre offering courses in sailing, powerboating, canoeing and bell-boating to both children and adults from fully qualified staff. The centre is fully equipped and offers tuition to beginners as well as the more experienced. Individual and group tuition is available with courses running throughout the year. The centre is currently home to several local clubs covering a range of water sports, e.g. marathon canoe racing, dragon boating, water polo and sailing.

Lifebelts are provided and maintained at intervals along the riverside for public safety.
River Tees Watersports Centre Located between the Tees Barrage and the Princess Diana Bridge the River Tees Water Sports Centre stands opposite the University of Durham (Stockton Campus) site. The centre has facilities for rowing, jet skiing, water skiing and dragon boating, providing boat storage, social and training facilities. The centre can offer groups or individuals the opportunity to take part in the various sports by offering taster sessions and courses throughout the year.
