Supporting Schools

The Leisure and Sports Development Team works with schools to enhance the opportunities for young people in sport.

PE and sport continues to flourish in Stockton, which is recognition of the hard work and commitment of the schools and their teachers.

The role of the Leisure and Sports Development service is that of an enabler, to assist others in the achievement of their potential. It is by working in partnership with other agencies, such as Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, that we are able to deliver our programme of support for schools.

Through a wide variety of initiatives complementing each other we endeavour to:-

  • help schools and teachers deliver the best possible Physical Education and Sport opportunities
  • encourage children & young people to take part in sport inside and outside school
  • forge links between schools, sport clubs and the community
  • increase funding opportunities
  • increase training opportunities for teachers
  • keep staff up to date with new developments in PE.

Examples of our work/support for schools include:

  • Providing guidance and advice on employing coaches in school.
  • Provision of sports equipment via our equipment library.
  • Organising the annual Joint Professional Development Day for all Secondary PE teachers in Stockton.
  • Providing training for Lunchtime Supervisors / teacher / adults other than teachers
  • Offering support and guidance on funding applications for schools.
  • Organising leadership courses for young people
  • Organising and delivering a comprehensive programme of professional development for teachers and adults involved in delivering P.E.
  • Chairing the heads of PE meeting and co-ordinating the 'Stockton PE & Sport' steering group.
  • Working closely with local sports clubs to provide school club links.
