Family History

Ancestry.com

Are you interested in researching your family history? Don't know where to start? Confused by all the different records? You are not alone.

To help get you started the Reference Library is able to organise one-to-one internet taster sessions which will build your confidence in using online Family History sites.  A basic computer knowledge is necessary to take part in our taster sessions but if you don't know your mouse from your monitor then we can arrange for you to have an informal IT session to get you started. This should give you the basic skills necessary to use a computer for researching your family history.

Alternatively you can book a place on our more in-depth 'Introduction to Family History' course and learn alongside other beginners. This course lasts four weeks and will cover how to search paper records as well as the Internet.

Stockton Family History Group meets to share and learn about family history. The group is informal and meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month from 2.00pm - 4.00pm, sometimes with a speaker on family history subjects.

We also have the Scottish Family History Group for those with Scottish ancestors. This informal group meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 2.00pm - 4.00pm.

If you are already making headway with your Family History search but have a troubleshooting query you can call in to the Reference Library and speak to a member of staff at our 'Family Tree Surgery' on the first Wednesday of each month 2-4pm.

To book any of these sessions or for more information please contact Stockton Reference Library.
