Preston Hall Museum's Winter Garden is now open to the public following extensive restoration work. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund the old Victorian teak conservatory has now been returned to its former glory.
The Winter Garden was originally built in 1885 when conservatories were a 'must have' addition to wealthy Victorian homes, following the success of Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace. The space would have provided a showcase where exotic plants from around the world could be grown and shown off, it would have also been a wonderful space for entertaining.
Visitors can now enjoy a myriad of plants from all around the world, including Canary Island Date Palms, Tasmanian Tree Ferns and Bird of Paradise Flowers. There will also be a series of family events, adult gardening lectures and a new and exciting education programme running throughout the year.
To find out more information about the Winter Garden and the up and coming events please call, Sara Luke, Winter Garden Education Assistant on (01642) 527820.
