The Hear by Right ProjectThe Hear by Right Project was implemented as part of Stockton-on-Tees Youth Service until 31st March 2004. The project worked with many young people in the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) Areas, to promote citizenship & democracy and to give young people a voice.
During the lifespan of the Hear by Right Project in Stockton, it worked with many young people in and around the NRF Areas on the issues that affect them. The young people who were involved in the project had the opportunity to raise awareness of citizenship and democracy, young peoples rights and responsibilities, equal opportunities, team building and much more. A major part of the project was for young people to understand the democratic process, and how they could be involved. The first step to reaching this was through the partnership work with the Secondary Schools Student Councils in the surrounding area, and by setting up 'The Hear by Right Community Forum' where young people from many of the areas, schools and youth forums were represented and discussed and debated many issues including the voting age - a national government campaign.
Although the group members of the Hear by Right Community Forum decided that they would like the forum to come to and end at the same time as the project, they all agreed that they would become active members in the other Youth Forums available to them including Stockton Youth Assembly, which was launched in June 2004.
All the partnership work, which was established as part of the Hear by Right Project, has and will continue to develop with support from Stockton Youth Service's Citizenship & Democracy Unit, including the work with Student Councils and Youth Forums in the area. The Hear by Right Project was the catalyst for the work of the Youth Empowerment Team to further develop once the project had come to an end.
