STEPs
STEPS is a service provided by Social Care and Health Services.
STEPS supports disabled people into:-
· College (vocational and non-vocational courses)
· Voluntary Work ( only where other people with or without disabilities carry out voluntary work)
· Work Experience ( no timescales are imposed)
· Paid Work (full or part-time). All jobs will pay the same wages and give the same conditions as a non-disabled person doing the same job.
The service provides Employment Training Advisors who can give a wide range of information, advice, guidance and practical support
Disabled People
STEPs identify with people their skills, abilities and development needs
People are not pressured into accepting a job merely because it is available. We help people find a job that suits them.
This ensures people are applying for jobs they have an interest in and enthusiasm for, leading to success.
Support for Employers
The STEPs service provides support, advice and guidance to disabled people and Employers.
This may include
· Disability awareness advice
· Advice on aids and adaptations
· Support and aftercare service
Some employers may never have employed a disabled person before and need advice on how they should do this. Employers may also have an employee who has recently become disabled and they need advice and support around retaining their employee
What can STEPs offer you from WORKSTEP?
WORKSTEP can offer a range of support, advice and practical help to employers in developing their employees to their full potential including open employment where appropriate.
Whilst at work supported employees should have opportunities to develop and gain work skills in order to achieve realistic occupational goals, with progression to unsupported employment for those who are able to do so.
WORKSTEP can also provide support to enable eligible individuals to retain their job if they are otherwise unable to continue work as a result of a newly acquired or existing disability.
Supported employees must work on equal terms with others. They must be paid the appropriate rate for the job and have the same terms and conditions as other employees in their workplace.
Training or Employment
- The service works with Employers to provide training and paid employment
- Some Employers will provide unpaid 'work trials` for disabled people. These will be assessed and monitored.
- These placements are used as a way of creating up-to-date work experience for a person, and give a clear assessment of the person's and the Employer's support needs.
- The service works with Employers when they employ and pay a disabled person.
The service gives direct support, advice and guidance to the Employer.
