Healthy Eating Policy

Good health is important for everyone. Stockton Council is keen to promote a healthy lifestyle, in particular by promoting the idea of a healthy and balanced diet for our children. To assist with this, we have adopted a schools healthy eating policy, which was recently launched by national government through the School Food Trust.

This policy sets out our objectives to ensure that all school meals across the Stockton Borough comply with national nutritional standards.

Our food-based standards ensure:

  • More Fruit and Vegetables
  • More oily Fish
  • Bread served daily
  • Fresh drinking water
  • Fresh Fruit Juice and Milk

The following are now restricted or no longer allowed:

  • No Confectionery- Such as chocolate, biscuits and sweets
  • No Savoury Snacks - Such as crisps
  • Salt and Condiments- Used minimal in cooking process
  • Deep Fried Food- Used rarely as we now prefer to oven bake
  • Meat Products- Such as sausage roll, sausages used rarely.

We are also committed to ensuring the food we serve meets strict Nutritional standards:

  • Wholemeal flour is used to a minimum of 25% with white flour in all made up products wherever possible to achieve a satisfactory product
  • All frying is carried out using vegetable oil
  • Dishes are produced using vegetable/sunflower fats, no animal fats are used
  • Salt is used to a minimum during the cooking process
  • Salt is not added to sweet dishes
  • Fried foods, such as fish and chips, will be well drained of excess oil
  • Sausages, Burger and Breadcrumb savouries will be oven cooked and fat drained
  • The amount of sugar in puddings will be minimised

Good Catering Practice

This guidance gives good practice, but which is not required by law. This guidance offers a practical way of meeting the new minimum nutritional standards, while meeting the needs of customers.

  • We will aim to reflect the likes and dislikes of our customers
  • We will aim to offer a wide selection of nutritionally balanced food
