How do I know which instruments might be best for me
Our teacher's will help guide you in your decision as there are
a number of different factors to be taken into account:
How big are you? String instruments come in different
sizes so there will always be one that is the correct size for you but
woodwind and brass instruments do not, so you need to have grown
sufficiently to be able to hold these instruments.
Do you like to be the centre of attention? If so you will
be happy on an instrument that is often the centre of attention such as the
violin, cello', flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, cornet. If
you are a little shy then an instrument such as the viola, guitar or tenor
baritone might suit you.
Do you want to play an instrument that not so many
choose? If so think about the viola, double bass,
oboe, bassoon, trombone, french horn.
Also remember that you may change instrument at a later stage eg. when you
have grown a bit more or when a different choice becomes available or
because your teacher has recommended a change. Tuition on the first
instrument will have helped to develop your listening and co-ordination
skills as well as your music reading skills and these will all help if you
do decide to change instrument later.
