TVYC, now in its 17th year, is conducted by John Forsyth who formed the choir in 1992. At present there are 23 schools and colleges represented and singers are between 14 - 19 years of age. Many of the singers have become members of the National Youth Choir. The Youth Choir, is therefore, a stepping stone to further exciting opportunities. Over the years the choir has been very successful: School Prom performances, Oustanding Performance Awards and Highly Commended Awards at the National Festival for Youth; Runners-Up in the 2006 BBC Radio Three Choir of the Year; Featured Choir in the TV Drama "Nature Boy"; recently the musical liaison with the Gabrieli Consort; in 2009 working with Ballet Rambert in the first North East performance of Howard Goodall's Requiem, "Eternal Light"; Performances at the Sage, Gateshead and a tour of Italy with the Tees Valley Youth Orchestra in July 2009.
