Tees Valley Yangchin Group

Thursdays 5.30 pm - 7.00pm

Studio One - Tees Valley Music Service, Bishopton Road West, Stockton on Tees, TS19 0QH

The Yangchin Group specialises in performing music from different parts of the world and takes its name from one of the instruments which features in so much of its music.  They play familiar instruments such as flutes, guitars and string bass, adding various others depending on the origins of the music, including Greek bouziki, the Chinese guzheng, hulusi and dizi, and the South American zamponas, toyos and charango, all of which the members have learnt to play since joining the group.  Current repertoire includes music from Bolivia, Chile, China, Austria, Greece and Romania.  The Yangchin Group reached the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth in both 2007 and 2008 and were invited to perform a the National Conference for Teachers of Chinese in London.  In 2009 they received the Musician's Union Award at the National Festival and were invited to the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Membership is by audition for players of Grade 4 and above who have a real enthusiasm for tackling music from different parts of the world, not only on the instrument they already study but possibly on others as well.  Flautists, clarinettists, violinists, guitarists and bass players are especially welcome, but players of any instrument with the appropriate degree of musicianship and determination will also be considered.
