Barge Training and Riverside Memories

Barge
This project, co-ordinated by Stockton Residents & Community Groups Association, is working with young people aged 16 - 24 by holding one-day taster boat training courses and has so far proved to be a great success. The course shows young people how to use the tiller, steer the boat, how to moor & secure the boat and other boat handling skills. The training is being delivered by older members of the community that have been through the training themselves, with a fully qualified skipper overseeing the process.

The second part of the project incorporates a river 'history' cruise. The barge can hold 12 passengers, usually a good mix of older and younger residents. With help from the Youth Services' intergenerational history project (Young People and Communities Together), a mix of old photo images and stories are delivered from the Riverside. Being able to moor up at several points; the Barrage, University site, Castlegate, Preston Park and Yarm, participants can follow the changes throughout the ages with the use of photos and older residents' memories.
