Stockton Adult Education Service provides a broad and balanced curriculum in foundation, non-vocational and vocational adult education. More than 820 classes are available in 85 subjects. Staff teach the majority of courses in sessions usually lasting two hours, offered daytime and evening. Increasingly, though, the Service is diversifying how learning is organised, and there are now examples of residentials and intensive one, two or three day courses held in the week and at weekends. Over the last two years, the Service has employed 28 tutors on a range of fractional contracts as well as two who are full time. This has meant that in the summer of 2003 it was possible to introduce a fourth term, which provided 22 courses in July and 20 in August, with learning for 370 students.
The curriculum aims to support the LSC 'Skills for the 21st Century' mission of widening participation, developing skills and employability and, by bringing people without qualifications onto the starting block, help increase the number of people with Level 2 qualifications. The curriculum also supports the LSC's social agenda of social inclusion and personal fulfilment through learning. In addition the curriculum supports the aims of the Regional Development Plan to decrease the number of people in the North East who have no qualifications and create an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to 'Skills for Life' targets.
