Case Studies
Shiela
Shiela contacted our Learner Support Office and explained that she
was visually impaired and she would like to attend a swimming course. This
would not be possible for her to go along alone, so we arranged for a
support worker to accompany her. The support worker swims along the side of
Shiela to make sure that she does not come into contact with anything or
anybody. Shiela has now been attending the swimming course for nearly a
year.
Peter
Peter was referred to us from one of our local partners. He wanted
to attend a computer course but had reduced mobility due to suffering from
a stroke a few years ago. We discussed with Peter what help he would need
to be able to attend the course and he said that he did not want one to one
support as he was quite able on a computer, but would need somebody to be
around just in case he needed anything. We arranged for a volunteer to be
in the class and help Peter when he needed it.
Mary
Mary enrolled on a cookery course and declared on her enrolment
form that she had learning disabilities. I contact Mary to discuss what
support that she would require and she explained that she had always
attended special needs groups before and have never been to a community
course before. We arranged for a support worker to work with Mary and she
gained lots of confidence through being on the course. Mary has now
enrolled on a Skills for Life course.
