Some people may require additional learning support to help them access learning.
This may include:
- Making sure a course and its venue is accessible
- Extra support or equipment to help with learning (e.g. support assistants, specially adapted equipment such as high visibility keyboards, ergonomic mice and software for reading the screen aloud or magnifying it).
- Special arrangements for exams or assessment
In 2007-2008 the Adult Education Service has supported 78 learners with 1-1 support in the classroom, and 42 learners with support for transport.
Some examples of support:
We have a blind lady who wanted to join a swimming class, so we arranged for a support worker to assist the tutor by getting into the pool with her to ensure that she was safe whilst in the water.
We had a number of learners who were referred to us from various agencies who had mental health problems and needed to attend confidence building courses to be able to progress in life as well as education. Again we put 1-1 support in with these students.
A deaf learner enrolled on a craft course, so we have a sign language communicator for her.
We have a number of blind learners who are doing ICT courses and we have bought a special programme for the computer to enable these learners to be able to achieve.
Our prospectus is available to Braille large print or audio tape to make sure that more people are able to have access to it.
