Skills for Life
In the Skills for Life programme we offer a range of courses
from beginner (pre-entry) to Level 2 (GCSE equivalent). Our courses
concentrate on the development of English and Maths skills, in a variety of
settings. We offer both traditional English and Maths courses plus courses
with a specific theme, e.g. driving theory or creative writing. The themed
courses help learners to improve their English or Maths skills whilst
learning a new skill.
The classes are available in local community centres both daytime and
evening. Learners can enrol at anytime throughout the year. There is an
initial interview with a member of the Skills for Life teaching team and
then, within 1-2 weeks of the enquiry, learners are supported into
appropriate provision.
After completing a Level 1 and 2 in literacy and numeracy, learners can progress on to Key Skills at Level 1 or 2 in Communication, Application of Numeracy and ICT. Key Skills develops transferable skills that are considered valuable in employment.
Many college courses now require level 1 or 2 in both literacy and numeracy
as an entrance qualification. Learners who gain these qualifications with
Tees Achieve can then go on to college courses in NVQ1 or 2 - courses such
as Teaching Assistant or Care Worker. Alternatively there is the
possibility to progress to NVQ Level 2 courses in Community Care Work or
Teaching Assistant with our Employee Engagement Programme.
