Family Learning

Stockton Adult Education Service has developed a comprehensive Family Learning Programme of courses and activities in community centres and local schools. In fact, in 2006/2007, Family Learning courses were delivered in 46 different locations across the Borough.

The government has recognised not only the contribution Family Learning can make to raising standards in schools for young people, but also the opportunity for adults to enhance their own skills and be better able to effectively support a child's development. Through the Family Learning Language & Numeracy (FLLN) programme, parents have the opportunity to work towards National Tests in Literacy and Numeracy and a wide range of home activities demonstrates how effective the impact of family engagement with a child's education can be.

We offer a wide range of courses in a wide range of topics. These include art and craft, ICT, family safety, drug awareness and parenting, as well as literacy and Numeracy. Learning does not have to be formal or necessarily take place in the classroom. The skills families learn support the work of teachers in school, and parents appreciate the opportunity to spend time in this way and so do the children.

What Family Learning students say:

"It has helped me to help my children with homework and writing skills."
"Family Learning introduces me to new friends and builds my confidence."
"I find it very interesting to learn about things I had forgotten about."

The Family Learning and Development programme is wide and varied and links into the wider programme offered by Stockton Adult Education Service including Skills for Life and ICT courses and class visits by the Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) team.
