Getting Repairs Carried Out
If you are a private tenant and you feel that your home needs repairs undertaking then you must in the first instance let your landlord or their representative know that you feel repairs are needed. By doing this in the correct way, it may help if there are any problems later on.
It is best to report any problems in writing, you can tell your landlord or their representative in person or by phone but this should always be followed up with a letter.
Your letter should be dated and provide details of the repair work that needs doing. Private Sector Housing have produced a sample letter below, which you can adapt to suit your needs and give to your landlord or their representative. You should keep a copy in case you have any difficulty getting this work done as this will show that your landlord or their representative was aware of the repair work.
As a tenant you need to allow reasonable access to your landlord or their representative so that the work needed can be done.
If your landlord or their representative fails to respond to your letter or complete the work, then you can contact the Private Sector Housing Division and ask us to visit and determine if we can help to get the repairs undertaken.
