Empty Homes

Photo showing a row of empty houses in a streetThe Private Sector Housing Empty Homes Team aims to reduce the number of long-term empty private homes in the Borough.  Through tackling this wasted housing, we aim to increase the supply of accommodation that is available both to let and buy.

Keeping a property empty costs money; empty homes are more expensive to insure (if insurance is available at all) and provide no rental income.  Excluding the cost of vandalism and depreciation, keeping a property empty could be costing owners as much as £135 a week (that is £7018 each year)*

There are approximately 962 homes across the Borough that have been empty for at least six months (long-term).

In 2010/11 the Empty Homes Team worked with owners and returned to use 58 properties, which equates to 69 units of accommodation.

The Empty Homes Team work to three principles; Connect,Support and Enforce.
