Strategic Housing Market Assessment

Housing regeneration 3The Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) is an important piece of work that reviews the overall picture of housing in the Tees Valley. It will assist local authorities and their partners in developing their understanding of how the housing market works and assist with strategic decision making.

In line with government guidance, a Housing Market Partnership was brought together to develop the SHMA which comprised the following organisations:

Local Authorities
Darlington BC, Hartlepool BC, Redcar & Cleveland BC, Middlesbrough BC, Stockton-on-Tees BC

Registered Social Landlords
Coast and Country, Erimus Housing, Home Group

Builders/Developers
Taylor Wimpey, Yuill

Other Organisations
Tees Valley Living, Shelter

SHMAs are particularly valuable in assisting policy development, decision making and resource allocation, in particular by:

  • Thinking regionally and long-term about housing need and demand.
  • Providing robust evidence to inform policy debate, particularly around the provision of both market and affordable housing, including type, size and ownership mix.
  • Understanding how housing markets work.

Both the summary and full version of the SHMA can be downloaded below.
