People with a Sensory Loss
The Sensory Support Team offers advice and information to clients with a sensory loss (i.e. clients with a visual impairment, clients who are hard of hearing, clients who are deaf and those with dual sensory loss).
Support and guidance are provided by specialist social workers and include:
- assessment of needs
- equipment to assist daily living
- signposting to local support groups
- registration of impairment, where appropriate
The team also employs specialist Mobility/Rehabilitation Officers who provide advice and training in independent living skills, communication and orientation and mobility to enable people to be as independent as possible.
We also run an Independence Plus Course which provides information and support to clients who are experiencing difficulties due to significant failing sight, or who have recently been registered as partially sighted or blind. Their carers are also welcome to attend.
We are committed to putting every person who needs support at the heart of all that we do and for people with sensory loss problems this means being flexible and offering every one who is eligible for social care services the opportunity to direct their own support.
Our self directed support system empowers people to take control and shape their own lives by identifying their own needs and organising their own support to meet those needs in a way that makes sense to them. This can be achieved through personal choice by either accessing services the council provide, through approved services provided by an independent organisation or through the offer of a direct payment.
To take the first steps to see if you are eligible for self directed support and for further information about any other Adult Care services please get in touch with our First Contact Team (contact details on this page).
