Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults From Abuse

Our aim is to safeguard vulnerable adults against abuse and to raise awareness throughout the community to prevent further abuse.

A vulnerable adult is a person aged 18+ who may need community care services due to mental or other disability, age or illness; and who may be unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation.  Abuse can be physical, sexual, verbal, financial, psychological or an act of neglect or institutional practice.

If you are worried that an adult may be harmed or neglected, you can contact the appropriate organisation on the following numbers:

  • In an emergency : Call 999
  • Adult Social Care (First Contact) : 01642 527764
  • Emergency Duty Team : 08702 402994

For additional information about safeguarding please contact the First Contact Team.

You can find out more information about the role local councils play in keeping vulnerable adults safe from abuse and ill treatment and what constitutes abuse on the North East Safeguarding Adults Network website.
