People with Disabilities
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council aims to promote well-being, independence and safety for people with a disability and their carers.
We organise and provide a range of services to support people with a disability living in the borough and their carers. These include information and advice, assessment of needs, provision of services whilst the client remains at home (such as home care, day care, sitting service and handyperson service) or can include residential or nursing care (including respite care and short breaks). We also provide advice on local support groups, education and employment
Instead of services provided through the council people may prefer to receive a direct payment whereby they are paid the equivalent amount of money to arrange their own services specific to their personal situation.
We also provide support and rehabilitation through our Intermediate Care Service to help people regain their functioning resulting from illness, disability or injury.
We are committed to putting every person who needs support at the heart of all that we do and for people with disabilities this means being flexible and offering every one who is eligible for social care services the opportunity to direct their own support.
Our self directed support system empowers people to take control and shape their own lives by identifying their own needs and organising their own support to meet those needs in a way that makes sense to them. This can be achieved through personal choice by either accessing services the council provide, through approved services provided by an independent organisation or through the offer of a direct payment.
To take the first steps to see if you are eligible for self directed support and for further information about any other Adult Care services please get in touch with our First Contact Team (contact details on this page).
