The Private Sector Housing Division is currently involved in a number of service areas that contribute to the Independent Living agenda.

They administrate and monitor the Low Cost Essential Adaptations Contract through which they provide minor works (works under £1,000), which either facilitate hospital discharge or reduce the risks of accidents occurring in or around the home. Last year (2007/08), more than 1,600 minor adaptations were undertaken.

They are also responsible for the provision of major adaptations within both the private and public sectors. Working in conjunction with occupational therapy, they provide adaptations such as ramps, stairlifts, level entry showers, and bedroom/bathroom extensions. In 2007/08 they had a combined budget of just over £2 million, which funded 483 adaptations.

They are currently procuring a Home Improvement Agency, which should be in place October 2008. The Agency will provide the following service elements which will greatly assist and promote independent living:

  1. General advice and information
  2. Co-ordination of service provision
  3. Repairs and improvements service
  4. Administration of minor adaptations.
  5. Handy Person and Maintenance services
  6. Home safety assessments
