Equipment, Appliances and Adaptations
Simple equipment, appliances and adaptations for people with a physical
disability (such as bath seats and grab rails) may be prescribed by social
workers, district nurses and other competent prescribers. More complex
specialist equipment will be prescribed by an occupational therapist.
Equipment, appliances and adaptations required to meet hearing or sight
impairment needs will be identified by social workers with the appropriate
skills.
Low cost essential adaptations (which cost less than £300) for people who
are owner occupiers and people who live in property rented in the private
sector will be commissioned and purchased by the Health and Social Care
Directorate. Such adaptations for council tenants are commissioned by Urban
Renewal following a recommendation from the Social Worker/Occupational
Therapist.
Major adaptations are recommended by Occupational Therapists and
commissioned by the Private Sector Housing Division in both the public
(Disabled Adaptations) and private sector (Disabled Facilities Grant)
A national initiative, bringing together structured, accessible services
around equipment for older and disabled people has been developed.
Regionally, this is predominantly provided by Tees Community Equipment
Service (TCES).
This is a jointly-funded service across 4 Local Authorities and 4 Primary
Care Trusts, providing aids to daily living (also known as equipment,
appliances or adaptations) to promote independence, following an assessment
by a health or social care professional.
Any such needs will be met following an assessment. Initial contact should
be through the 1st Contact Unit.
