Stockton Climate Change Action Plan

Stockton Borough Council's Climate Change Action plan was published in 2007 with a target of reducing CO2 emissions within the Stockton Borough Council area by 8.75% below 2000 levels by the year 2012.

Several events over recent months have lead to the need to refreshing the Climate Change Action Plan to bring it into line with Local, National and European guidelines and legislation.

  • The Pitt Review and Government recommendations following the flooding incidents of 2007.
  • The UK Climate Change Act 2008 which is the first, globally, to set legally binding CO2 reduction targets.
  • In January 2009, Stockton Borough Council signed the Covenant of Mayors, an agreement which sets targets for European cities to achieve CO2 reductions of more than 20% by 2020.
  • The revising of the Tees Valley Climate Change Strategy, which the five Tees Valley Authorities, Stockton Borough Council, Middlesbrough Council, Darlington Council, Hartlepool Council and Redcar and Cleveland Council, all contribute to. A copy of the Tees Valley Climate Change Strategy is available to download below.
  • The introduction of new National Indicator NI188 - Adapting to Climate Change, which has lead to a much more robust approach to adaptation measures and the development of an adaptation action plan.
