The European Covenant of Mayors
The Covenant of Mayors is a European Commission led project which unites towns and cities across the continent with a common environmental purpose. It aims to allow local authorities to work together, sharing ideas and strategies to create energy-efficient and low-carbon cities.
By signing up to the Covenant of Mayors, Stockton Council commits to reduce CO2 emissions across the Borough by 21% below 1990 levels by 2020.
All 12 local authorities in the North East have signed the Covenant of Mayors, making the North East of England the first region in Europe to commit to this ambitious initiative.
A Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Stockton has been developed which details how the Council will reach this ambitious target. The Plan covers action in both the public and private sectors including:
- Built environment, including new buildings and major refurbishment;
- Municipal infrastructure, council and public buildings, street lighting etc;
- Land use and urban planning;
- Public and private transport policies and urban mobility;
- Community participation;
- Energy efficiency by both business and communities.
Stockton Council's Sustainable Energy Action Plan can be downloaded.
