10:10 - Will You Sign Up?
Stockton Council has made a commitment to reducing the impact we
have on the
environment by joining the national 10:10
campaign. The 10:10 campaign aims to get people to make
a real effort and commit to helping the environment
by cutting carbon emissions by 10 per cent during the year 2010.
On December 7th 2009, as world leaders meet for the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, the Council formally signed up to the campaign. And you can do your bit too;
click here to sign up and make your own commitment to 10:10.
To help us to reach our 10:10 goal we will be encouraging our employees to carry out some simple energy saving ideas - we will be doing a whole host of things to help our teams to realise that every small change they make as individuals will make a big difference to the environment.
Some of the initiatives we'll be carrying out to help our colleagues make those changes are; energy advice events in each of our main council buildings, loan of energy monitors, help and advice to make carbon saving as painless as possible.
We are already doing many things to reduce our carbon emissions, including:
- Carbon Management Programme which is to reduce emissions by 25 per cent by 2013.
- Climate Change Action Plan which aims to reduce carbon emissions in the community by 21 per cent by 2020.
- GoWarm initiative working in the domestic sector to help improve energy efficiency of over 2,000 homes over the last 2 years.
- Bid for Community Energy Saving Programme funding of over £6m to tackle those hard to heat homes in the most deprived areas of the borough.
- Providing energy monitors on loan to householders through the library service.
- Obtained £80k funding through Regional Improvement and Efficiency programme for 20 schools to have energy monitors installed to allow school managers and pupils to identify and reduce energy wastage.
The 10:10 campaign encourages individuals, businesses, schools, community groups and other organisations to take part. You can find out more about 10:10 here.
