Health and Safety at Work

We aim to protect the health and safety of employees and members of the public who may be affected by work activities in the Borough.  We also help employers, employees and the self-employed understand and comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation.

A wealth of health and safety information, guidance and legislation is provided in these pages.  You can also use the web links on this and other pages to access more information.  If you need specific advice or need to speak to one of our officers please contact us.

Enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation in workplaces is shared between the Local Authority and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).  In general we (the Local Authority) deal with:

  • Retail premises
  • Warehousing
  • Hotels
  • Residential care homes
  • Leisure complexes
  • Catering Premises
  • Offices

In Stockton such workplaces total in the region of 4000 premises.  We also enforce smoke-free legislation in all enclosed workplaces and public spaces (for more information on this subject please visit our smoke-free information page).

We investigate, where necessary, accidents at work and respond to requests for service.

Registering your business provides you with an opportunity to download a copy of the health and safety premises registration form.  Report and accident/incident allows the ONLINE facility to report an accident/incident as required by the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.
