ALIEN WILDLIFE APPEARS AT LOCAL NATURE RESERVES

Some pretty strange creatures have emerged from Barwick Pond Local Nature Reserve. These newts may look like an alien species but have, in fact, been created by artist Andrew Mckeown with help from Stockton's Local Nature Reserves Officer and schoolchildren based at Barley Fields and Myton Park Primary Schools in Ingleby Barwick.

Stockton Borough Council's Countryside and Greenspace team initiated the project that was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Impetus Waste. These particular art features will help to promote Barwick Pond and that it is home to many amphibian species including the Great Crested Newt, Europe's most protected amphibian. As well as being visually striking, these features serve a useful purpose by allowing people to sit on the lower part of the art work, which is represented by a leaf with the newts creating a backrest. .
