Romano Park - Ingleby Barwick

This new park is located in the heart of Ingleby Barwick off Lamb Lane to the rear of Tesco.

The Council have adopted a contemporary and highly innovative approach to the design of the park, which was highly commended at the 2009 Landscape and Amenity Awards. Romano Park

Local children have been involved throughout the 'design journey'. Over 40 children were involved, firstly visiting other parks and play areas to help develop ideas of their own, which were then captured in models, drawings and other media. Local exhibitions and a dedicated website were developed to share these ideas with the wider community:

Through this consultation process (Spring 2008) the children's ideas were developed into a concept plan and the 'Landscape for Play' was born.

The scheme aimed to;

  • Provide challenging and rewarding play opportunities - with a diverse range of equipment fully integrated into a invigorating and stimulating play landscape.
  • Balance Risk and benefit.

By shifting over 2,000 tonnes of soil, the Landscape for Play has transformed an area of flat uninspiring grassland into a mosaic of mounds, valleys and routes full of play value.

Footpaths wind around the park, boulders form steps, a rope bridge and nets that can be used for climbing link different areas of play together.

Crowning the skyline is the 'Hill Fort', comprising vertical pillars of green oak from a sustainable source. With different means of ascending and descending the fort inspires the creative minds of children.

There are zip wires, balancing wires, sand play areas and many innovative and original pieces of play equipment dotted around the landscape. There are also more traditional play features such as swings, slides and roundabouts.

A climbing wall, incorporating different coloured, routes, provides a challenge to children of all ages and abilities; while a unique 'playcube' is a bespoke design created by artist Lee Brewster and the children.
