Vehicle Crossings and Opening Up Licences

Vehicle Crossing

Please note that it is illegal to place materials or ramps in the street to create a driveway crossing.  A vehicle crossing is needed for vehicular access to a property or business to prevent both damage to the footway and the vehicle crossing the footway.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council can provide you with a vehicle crossing.  For a free, no obligation, written quotation you can either complete the on-line form below or contact us direct on 01642 391959.

Customers can also hire a private contractor to carry out the work to provide a vehicle crossing however certain criteria must be met before the works can commence, including the completion of an Opening Up Licence.

Opening Up Licence

Any contractor intending to carry out any excavation works on any part of an adopted highway will be required to apply for an opening up licence (sometimes called an opening out licence) from the Council.

The contractor is required to provide details of Public Liability Insurance, currently £5 million and details of utility apparatus in the area.  A fee of £72.50 is also payable to Stockton Borough Council prior to works commencing on site.

To make an application either contact us direct on 01642 391959 or complete the on-line form below.
