Keeping Streets Clean |
|
- We have a regular programme of cleansing in all areas of the Borough. The frequency of visits that a particular area will receive is dependent on the volume of litter that is likely to be present in the area. For example, the main shopping areas will receive a more intensive service than a normal residential street. However, all streets in the borough are visited by our street cleansing personnel on a weekly basis for litter-picking and other cleansing tasks.
- We have a zonal clearance arrangement, which basically splits the borough into four main areas. Each area has a Team Leader and a team of cleansing staff. This arrangement means that our staff can become accustomed to their areas and quickly build up a knowledge of those areas that require regular visits etc. and more importantly, have a sense of "ownership" in their areas.
- Although we do carry out an effective mechanical sweeping programme (sweeping road gutters and back lanes with sweeping machines) we are also aware that many of our customers feel that a more personal approach to cleansing services is required. We have reacted to this by employing more litter-pickers who you will often see travelling around the Borough in their small white three wheel vehicles (Piaggio's).
- All residential streets will receive a litter-picking visit every week and a mechanical sweeper will visit your area every three weeks. We will also respond to any additional cleansing requests that we receive and in most cases we will complete the request within 48 hours.
- We also carry out other works to keep our area tidy, such as weed spraying, strimming overgrown vegetation and clearing becks. This type of work is normally undertaken by our "hit squad" as it cannot be carried out as part of our daily work and tends to be programmed in advance.
- When we carry out our weed-spraying programme, we will treat all areas at least twice per year. We begin around April each year and the second "spot" treatment is done around 3-4 months later.
- We work in partnership with both NACRO and the Youth Offending Service to improve the standard of cleanliness in many areas of the Borough. This arrangement not only helps to improve the Borough but also provides valuable opportunities to those members of the community who may have difficulties in finding forms of employment.
- We are responsible for clearing the contents from empty Council homes and gardens in preparation for new tenants moving in. This arrangement is undertaken in partnership with Tristar Homes who are responsible for the management of the Council's housing stock. However, it is the responsibility of the outgoing tenant to ensure that the property is cleared of all items, therefore a charge may be made if a clearance of the property or the gardens is required. If you require information about this service, please contact your local Tristar Homes Housing Centre.
- We are also responsible for cleaning the highway after the end of each market in Billingham Town Centre, Stockton High Street and Thornaby Town Centre. At the closure of each market the area is fully cleared of all items and the paths are mechanically swept.
- We also offer a grafitti removal service although the service is chargeable if the grafitti is on private property. For further information contact CFYA.
