Care For Your Area are responsible for the maintenance of all adopted Roads and Footpaths in the Borough. In addition to this we inspect and maintain all Housing, leisure and Open Space land, including Parks, Cemeteries and Play Areas. As well as routine inspections (
see Highway Inspections), a team of Asset Technicians respond to Customer requests regarding maintenance issues and determine any necessary corrective action to repair the defect. Defects requiring attention are known as 'Actionable Defects' which meet specific intervention levels as set out in national policies, these are: - 20mm or deeper on a footpath or 40mm or deeper on a road. In addition to road and footpath maintenance, Street Furniture, such as benches, street name plates, directional signs and bollards are also inspected for damage and where necessary repaired or renewed.
Highways must be kept clear of obstructions/projections for safety reasons. The Council has the power to serve notice on a person who commits an offence of wilful obstruction on the highway. In certain circumstances the Courts allow the highway authority to remove obstructions and recover reasonable costs incurred in doing so from the offender.
Please contact Care for your Area if you see an obstruction on the highway or pavements such as:-
- scaffolding
- hoardings
- roadworks
- advertising boards
- building materials
Alternatively, if you need to seek permission to obstuct a highway or pavements, you must contact Care For your Area to see if this is permissible.
