Dog Fouling |
|
Failure to clean up after your dog is an offence. Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 authorised Council Officers can issue a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice to anyone that is seen to allow their dog to foul in a public place and not clean up after it. Failure to pay the fixed penalty will generally result in prosecution that may lead to the offender being fined up to £1,000.
There are dog waste bins located across the borough, with new bins installed when funds are available. The bins are emptied and maintained by the Councils' Care for Your Area team. If you would like to report a problem relating to a dog bin please use one of the online service forms at the end of this page. Remember to always take a poop scoop bag out with you whenever you are walking your dog. It is never an acceptable excuse to forget to take a bag with you and not clean up after your pet.

| What is the Council doing about dog fouling? |
|
The Councils Animal Welfare Team are responsible for managing the enforcement and education of responsible dog ownership. There are a number of ways that we do this:
- Free poop scoop bags are available from most council office receptions.
- We make use of various marketing initiatives including high profile television, radio and outside advertising campaigns alongside frequent 'community-based' events with workshops at schools and talks at residents meetings and various associations.
- To deter incidents of dog fouling, authorised Council Enforcement Officers visit known problem areas. Patrols are carried out seven days a week at various times including early mornings and late evenings.

| Where else other than a dog bin can I dispose of my dog waste? |
|
If you are out walking in a public place and there is no dog bin available, you may dispose of small quantities of bagged dog waste in an ordinary litter bin. Of course, the other option is to take the bagged waste home with you. |
