Bio-security

Transport of Animals (Cleansing and Disinfection) (No.3) Order 2003

Since Foot and Mouth it is essential to keep up and improve standards of bio - security on farms, in markets, at shows and on livestock vehicles in order to reduce the risk of spreading disease.

There are already strict rules about bio-security at markets and shows, every market and show has a bio-security officer whose job is to make sure that the rules are followed

The golden rule is "Clean In - Clean Off"

If you take animals to a show, please follow the instructions the show organisers and the bio-security officer give you. If you do not follow these rules you may be prosecuted.
Cleansing of Lorry
The Transport of Animals (Cleansing and Disinfection)(England)(No3)Order 2003

The rules that were implemented during Foot and Mouth regarding the cleansing and disinfection of livestock vehicles continue to apply. The main requirements are that, after unloading the animals the vehicle must be fully cleansed and disinfected as soon as is reasonably practicable. If it is not practicable to cleanse and disinfect your vehicle on site, you must complete a declaration to say where you will take your vehicle for cleansing and disinfection, within 24 hours and before the vehicle is used again. You must give a copy of the declaration to the market / abattoir operator.

Wheels, wheel arches and mud flaps must always be cleaned and disinfected when the vehicle is cleansed as well as when a declaration form is completed when leaving a market.

As cleansing and disinfection is so important in disease control, checks will be carried out to make sure that the rules are followed. You may be prosecuted if you do not follow these rules.
