Emissions from certain industrial processes are controlled under an
environmental permit scheme, which is administered as shown below:-
- The Environment Agency - for the more polluting industries where there is a potential for pollution of air, water and land.
- The Environmental Health Unit - for the smaller, less polluting industries, controls relate generally to air pollution although we do control water and land pollution from a limited number of premises .
The permit imposes strict conditions on the operators of industrial processes in relation to monitoring of emissions and process controls.

The
Environmental Health Unit is responsible for controlling the following activities:-
- Dust, fume and odour nuisance from industrial premises.
- Dark Smoke emissions from chimneys serving combustion plant.
- Dark Smoke emissions from open burning on commercial premises.
- Prior approval of chimneys on large combustion plants. Operators of these plants are required to provide calculations to justify the chimney height serving the plant, we will audit these calculations.An application form can be downloaded by clicking below.
