Air Pollution

Under the Air Quality bulletin section we issue a daily bulletin where we inform the public of the measured pollution levels in the area and compare this with the Government Health Guidelines., this allows us to classify the pollution in four bands :- low, moderate ,high or very high.
Under the Air Quality Information section we provide details of our work on Review and Assessment of  Air Quality in the Stockton area to meet the Government's National Air Quality Strategy.

Under the Asbestos Advice section we provide information on identification and likely locations around the home that you may encounter asbestos and how to safely dispose of it.

Under the section on Bonfires we explain the controls on smoke nuisance from domestic bonfires and give advice on possible alternatives to bonfires

Under the Industrial Pollution section we outline the controls on emissions from the industrial and commercial activities.

Under the Smoke Control Area section we explain the law which prohibits the burning of coal and wood for domestic heating and cooking in certain areas of the Borough.
smoky diesel
Normally emissions from road vehicles are dealt with by the Police who have powers to stop vehicles, in areas where there are serious pollution problems i.e.where there is an Area Quality Management Area [AQMA].Local Councils have powers to carry out roadside testing of vehicles and issue fixed penalty notices to drivers of vehicles failing the test .However these powers are NOT available to us in Stockton as we have no AQMAs.
There is however a scheme to report smoky diesel vehicles to the Vehicle Inspectorate at Leeds, the scheme applies only to Heavy Goods Vehicles and Buses if they emit large quantities of smoke.
