The Food Safety (General Food Hygiene)(Butchers' Shop) Amendment Regulations 2000 covers England only and commenced on 1 May 2000.
They amend the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995 to require the annual licensing by food authorites of certain retail butchers' shops and other retail outlets in England which handle unwrapped raw meat, sell raw meat and ready to eat foods from the same premises.
For the purposes of the licensing regulations, a butchers shop is any food premises, other than catering premises, in which commercial operations are carried out in relation to unwrapped raw meat and raw meat and ready to eat food, are both placed on the market for sale or supply. Such premises would typically include retail butchers shops, mobile shops, market stalls, some farm shops and the retail activites of catering butchers involving unwrapped raw meat and ready to eat foods.
