The Service is a multi agency team working in the Local Authority area of Stockton on Tees in the North East of England. We undertake statutory work with young offenders between the ages of 10 and 17 years who are subject of Court Orders and Police Final Warnings, and work on a voluntary basis with young people who have been identified as being at risk of offending and some who are subject of Police Reprimands.
The work of our service, and of all the Youth Offending Teams within England and Wales is monitored on behalf of the Home Office by the Youth Justice Board, and largely stems from the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
The principal aim of the Service, as dictated by the Crime and Disorder Act is the
'prevention of offending by children and young people.' Six key objectives have been laid down as a means of guiding teams towards their objective.
Key Objectives
- The swift administration of justice so that every young person accused of breaking the law has the matter resolved without delay.
- Confronting young offenders with the consequences of their offending for themselves and their family, their victims and the community and helping them to develop a sense of personal responsibility.
- Interventions that tackle the particular factors that put the young person at risk of offending.
- Punishment proportionate to the persistence and seriousness of offending.
- Encouraging reparation to victims by offenders.
- Reinforcing the responsibilities of parents
