Home Safety Association
Every year in the UK almost 4,000 people die in accidents in the home and 2.7 million turn up at accident and emergency departments seeking treatment. Stockton's Home Safety Association is a supporting group helping to prevent Accidents in the Home and Environment, the group meet every month.
The association is a multi agency partnership approach consisting of:
- Council Members
- Council Officers
- Stockton Police
- Cleveland Fire Brigade
- Voluntary Sector Representatives
The aim is to give their support for accident prevention projects and
initiatives within the borough of Stockton. Some of the projects supported
are:
- Fire Safety in the Home
- Stockton's Crucial Crew Event
- Firework Safety
The Home Safety Association meets monthly and reports directly to full
meetings of Stockton Council.
Four Councillors are elected each year and serve together with officers from the Trading Standards Department who report on suspect household items for sale that have come to their notice.
Officers from the Fire Service and Police attend to report on issues affecting local household safety and security.
For several years the Association was part of a successful national initiative promoting firework safety.
Members of the Association work with the Fire Service to encourage householders to exchange their chip pan for a safe electrical deep fat fryer.
This summer the Association set up an attractive market stall with a colleague from the Primary Care Trust to highlight how to prevent falls in the home.
Members support the annual two week Crucial Crew event for year 6 pupils across Stockton demonstrating how to avoid dangerous situations.
Currently Trading Standards are trying to create small areas of the Borough where cold callers knocking on doors will not be welcome. The Association is supporting this initiative.
Plans are also in place on how to advise householders to prevent them being duped by bogus trades people. This also has the full support of the Association.
The Association wishes to increase the public involvement in its activities by inviting local residents to show an interest. Any person wishing to join the association should contact the secretary, Michelle Jones. Tel. 01642 526190 michelle.jones@stockton.gov.uk.
