Alley Gating

Single alley gate with decorative grill

By April 2009, there will be 283 alley gates installed throughout the borough. They have already been placed in

  • Parkfield
  • Newtown
  • Portrack
  • Tilery
  • Thornaby
  • Billingham
  • Yarm

They were installed as a crime prevention measure to reduce dwelling burglaries, where access is gained from the rear, arson and anti-social behaviour. A steering group meets monthly to discuss issues arising and new areas that require alley gates. This group comprises of representatives from Community Safety, Regeneration, Police, Fire service, Care for your Area and Engineers.

Earlier this year the Police and Fire service conducted a review of crime figures for the streets where gates had been installed. The majority of streets showed a big reduction in burglaries and arson.

We are waiting for news on the allocation of extra funding to allow us to extend the scheme.
